City of Glenwood Springs Electric System

Glenwood Light & Power Company power plant 1898

The origins of the Glenwood Springs Electric System dates back to 1886 with the construction of a coal-fired, steam driven electric power plant on the north bank of the Grand (Colorado) River, just west of what is now the Hot Springs Pool. The Glenwood Light & Water Company operated the electric system until it was purchased by the City of Glenwood Springs in 1947, and converted to a municipal utility (photo courtesy of Frontier Historical Society).

Currently, the City's service territory covers approximately 34 square miles. Approximately 45 miles of overhead line and 70 miles of underground line provide electrical service to about 4,460 residential customers and 1,241 commercial customers inside and outside the corporate limits.

The majority of electrical energy consumed by our customers is currently supplied by the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska. The City has a small allocation from the Western Area Power Administration.
